Moving from an Unreliable Server to a Secure Cloud Workplace
Overview
Wagner Renewables Ltd needed a dependable and secure IT environment that could support its growing operation.
An ageing on-premises server was experiencing recurring failures, disrupting access to important files and systems and creating increasing operational risk.
Aztec took a proactive approach, first putting a secure fallback in place to protect access to business-critical data before completing the wider migration to a modern, cloud-first workplace.
The result was a more reliable and secure IT environment, with less reliance on legacy infrastructure and a stronger foundation for future growth.
Business data was migrated into its permanent SharePoint and OneDrive locations, while devices were joined to Microsoft Entra ID.
Network services were also reconfigured to remove dependencies on the ageing server, which was subsequently retired.
This replaced the legacy infrastructure with a more manageable cloud-first environment designed to support the way Wagner Renewables works today.
Security Built Into the Transformation
Security formed a key part of the project.
Aztec strengthened Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), implemented Conditional Access policies and enhanced endpoint protection.
These measures helped Wagner Renewables move away from legacy infrastructure towards a more secure, manageable and well-governed IT environment.
Ongoing Support
With Aztec's ongoing support in place, Wagner Renewables also has access to a responsive technology partner that can provide guidance, resolve day-to-day issues and help drive continual improvement as the business evolves.
The Outcome
Wagner Renewables Ltd now operates on a modern cloud-first platform that provides staff with secure and reliable access to the files and systems they need, whether working in the office or remotely.
By removing its reliance on an ageing on-premises server, the business has:
- Reduced operational risk
- Improved IT reliability
- Simplified day-to-day IT management
- Strengthened its security posture
- Improved access to business data
- Increased flexibility for office and remote working
Modern identity and device management controls also provide greater visibility and control across the IT environment, while staff benefit from a more consistent working experience.
Most importantly, Wagner Renewables now has a secure, well-governed IT foundation that supports day-to-day operations while providing the flexibility to grow with confidence.
The Challenge
Wagner Renewables Ltd relied on an ageing server and traditional domain environment that had become increasingly unreliable.
Recurring hardware failures left the server unavailable for extended periods, interrupting access to important files and systems and delaying day-to-day work.
The business needed to move away from its reliance on ageing on-premises infrastructure while ensuring its data remained accessible throughout the transition.
The priority was to:
- Reduce the immediate risk associated with the ageing server
- Protect access to business-critical data
- Establish a more reliable IT environment
- Move towards modern cloud-based services
- Strengthen security and device management
- Create a more flexible foundation for future growth
Our Approach
Aztec began by addressing the immediate operational risk rather than waiting for the wider migration project to be completed.
Protecting Data Before Migration
Using Microsoft's SharePoint Migration Tool, Aztec synchronised Wagner Renewables' existing on-premises file shares to a temporary SharePoint environment.
This created a secure fallback for business-critical data, providing an alternative source of access should the ageing server fail.
That precaution quickly demonstrated its value.
When the legacy server became unavailable for an entire day, the business already had its key files synchronised to SharePoint. Aztec was therefore able to restore access to important data and help staff continue working while the underlying server issue was resolved.
What could have become a significant operational disruption was substantially reduced because the risk had been identified and addressed in advance.
Moving to a Modern Cloud Workplace
Following the server failure, Aztec completed Wagner Renewables' transition to a Modern Desktop environment.
With ongoing support from Aztec, the business also has a technology partner that understands its environment and can continue to provide guidance and improvements as its requirements evolve.
In Their Words
“The move to a modern cloud environment has made daily work feel faster, simpler, and more secure. Our team now has easier access to the files and systems they need, both office based and remote working, with a much more reliable setup in place. The migration was handled smoothly, with minimal disruption, and we felt well supported throughout the process.”
